External HD burnt

Post by Qlies on Sat Apr 16, 2011 6:15 pm

Hey guys, yesterday my external HD (a Samsung..something) died on me. It started bleeping and then my computer did not recognise it anymore, the lights are flashing but that's about it. Went to see some Indian computer geeks today, that said it's probably burnt (there was something not rotating anymore? I have no clue what this means but the bottom line is, it's not working anymore. It quite possibly burned indeed, because the electricity here sometimes gives shocks..), and that I can try to put it in the fridge for a day or two.

Now I am not too sure whether this is a good idea. Anyone any thoughts on this? Or on other ways to recover data..?

Thanks a lot!

Some have claimed this technique works. See

The guy advises that you should put it in a plastic bag, first, to keep it from condensing. Good luck.
